What does Fidelity mean?
Fidelity, rooted in the Latin word fidēlis meaning “faithful” or “loyal,” represents the commitment to delivering a programme as it was designed. For Dynamo Maths, this involves:
- Consistency: Following lesson plans, online activities, and worksheets in their intended order and structure
- Accuracy: Using the prescribed tools and methods without alteration or shortcuts
- Commitment: Adhering to the programme over time and recognising meaningful progress requires patience and sustained effort
When interventionists commit to fidelity, they ensure that children experience the full benefit of Dynamo Maths’ systematic and personalised design, which is crafted to meet the specific needs of learners with dyscalculia.

The NumberSense developmental profile of students at risk of dyscalculia is – like the diagnosis itself – highly variable. Our work shows that children with a diagnosis are likely to have a highly variable profile, and children without a particular diagnosis will have common componential areas of difficulties. In other words, a label from a diagnosis doesn’t define the NumberSense Developmental profile of the child as each student is unique in their genetic composition and personal, medical and educational experiences.
Students at risk of dyscalculia are likely to underachieve in maths compared to their peers and may have other strengths that, when interventionists identify them, can be used as a trampoline for repositioning learning and development.
Supporting a child with dyscalculia is not just about addressing numerical skills – it’s about rebuilding the cognitive and emotional framework necessary for learning. Fidelity ensures that these critical areas are nurtured systematically:
- Working Memory: Children with dyscalculia often struggle to hold and manipulate numerical information. Meaningful activities with structured practice are vital for progress
- Number Sense: The ability to understand and work with numbers develops through exposure to well-sequenced activities

Each of these areas takes time to develop. When fidelity is compromised, progress in one area may falter, slowing overall growth. Likely, the persistent and significant areas of learning barriers may not have been identified.

Fidelity matters, just like the prescription from a doctor, when deviating from the prescribed approach, even with good intentions, can undermine outcomes.

“The capacity to empathise, to engage the other with a sensibility that combines knowledge with feeling, requires one to have the ability to understand the situation of the ther in a way that moves beyond mere comprehension to appreciation, to a participatory mode of understanding. It requires, as it were, the ability for one to place their mind in their heart”.

I have 15 years of experience as a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. More recently, I undertook research at University College London, which inspired the creation of Puffin Maths for the deaf and hard of hearing, which now provides access to the National Curriculum using British Sign Language (BSL).
